Part 1 : What is wine carafe?

Carafe alone comes from the Arabic word which is kharraf. It means container that used to be the place for filling liquid. While nowadays, it can be defined as a vessel where it’s open-topped glass and functions for serving different kinds of liquids. It’s more versatile than a decanter. But if we’re talking about wine carafe, then it’s a different case.

Wine carafe can be called a decanter too. Why? Because they have the same function, to serve wine. Carafe has a broader function for drink, but if it’s about ‘ wine carafe’, then it is for wine only. From here we can conclude that wine carafe and decanter are the same thing. This makes people usually mix their terms and it’s okay.

Part 2 : The shapes do matter

Decanter or wine carafe have many different types of forms with such unique shapes. Of course, it’s not only the fact that the decanter’s shapes are well-designed. There is a reason why the wine carafes are formed like that.

The ‘original’ version of the decanter usually has a round and wider shape on the bottom side. It’s designed like that to make sure all sediment was removed from the wine. To let the wine breath. It was a necessary thing back then, where there was no technology to do wine filtration. Let the shapes of the glass do their thing.

These days, decanters have many various shapes. Mainly it’s because of the beautiful design which makes the unique-shaped decanters are in demand. Just like how Le Chateau Wine Decanter is. But this doesn’t mean they get rid of the main function of the decanter. They still have it, but in different forms.

Part 3 : Variety shapes

We have already talked about what wine carafe is and how the shapes do matter. Now, let’s discuss the various shapes of it.

Wine carafe or decanter’s shapes can be differentiated by size and form. As for form, usually they have swan-shaped, duck-shaped, cornett-shaped, standard, and so on. While for the size, it has three main types. Each shape has their own reason why it is designed like that. Here are are the main types :

• Full-bodied Red Wines : Use a decanter with a wide base.

• Medium-bodied Red Wines : medium-sized decanter

• Light-bodied Red Wines : serve in a small to medium-sized decanter that’s been chilled.

Choose freely as you want! Make sure that it does suit you because each shape has its own purpose.
