Renters’ living habits changed over time, as did the floor plans of rental apartments. The average size of a new apartment completed in 2018 in the U.S. is 941 square feet, 52 square feet less than the size of an apartment built 10 years ago.
For RENTCafé’s latest analysis, it looked at apartment sizes and how they vary from state to state. According to the data, over the past decade, the average rent for new apartments went up by 28%, even though their size is shrinking.
Here are some more highlights:
• Phoenix and Glendale took two spots in top 20 cities with the smallest rental apartments in the nation.
• In 2018, the average apartment size in Phoenix is around 783 square feet, while renters in Glendale can use up to 781 square feet.
• While apartment size in Phoenix decreased by 19% over the past decade, the rent went up by 36%: from $735 in 2008 to $998 in 2018.
