The nesters in the room are always in a constant state of conundrum. We’re always looking to improve our home. Sometimes that means following a trend, or going off-road with our décor ideas, and sometimes it just isn’t enough. Sometimes you simply look at your home and wonder why it doesn’t look like the photos in magazines or Pinterest. Well, that’s likely because you don’t have the budget for these productions to live in, not to mention the fact that a real person is really living in it.

Fear not. We have a few budget-friendly tips to help you make your home look like a showroom. We’re looking at five things that you can do on a budget that will make your home look glamourous.

Upsize your duvet

This is a simple one and it might even surprise you: if you have a double bed, upgrade your duvet to a king. If you have a king size, upgrade your duvet to a super king, etc. You want the look, not to mention the feel, of the luxury of having so much bedding that it drapes nicely over the sides, rather than just sitting on the edges.

Add texture

The lesson that a lot of us amateur home decorators don’t seem to take on board is the importance of texture. Try to incorporate it in many ways in every room. The limewash wall trend is a good example of this right now. It might not feel like texture to the touch but your eye definitely sees texture. Add different materials to your home, including anything that you can feel by just hearing its name, like rattan, wicker, wool, fluffy, etc.

Desaturate your color palette

Whether you agree with it or not, there is something about a desaturated palette that simply says “expensive”. It might play into the “quiet luxury” idea that we’re seeing more of in fashion thanks to Succession – you have nothing to prove so you’re not doing too much.

So, sure, add in a blue here or there, but make it muted and pastel. That wall should be red? Try a burnt dark red, etc. Focus on neutrals and muted palettes.

High windows

Sometimes, there is nothing you can do to heighten your windows, especially on a budget, but there are ways to accentuate the glass in your home to make it look more glamourous. For example, you can consider installing an internal glass door to make the room look more expensive.

Framed, personalized art

There is nothing that looks more cheap than items, particularly art items, that people recognise because everyone else has them. Art is, at least theoretically, supposed to be expensive. We’re all supposed to be choosing our art pieces from an auction and silently paying. That isn’t reality for a lot of us, so what you can do to make sure that the art you buy is one of a kind. That can either mean buying from smaller creators, who are all over Etsy, Instagram, and other sources, but also you can commission a personalised piece. Depending on who you’re hiring, the price for that could go up, but it will be worth it to give your home that glamourous expensive look you’re looking for.

Well lit closet

There’s no point in having a glorious big closet with everything you could possibly want in it if you can’t see it. Whether it’s big or small, cluttered, or organised, or even a walk-in, it needs lighting. You will better illuminate the items so you spend less time deciding what to wear and less time reaching for the same five items you cycle through. We all do it.
