A renowned Phoenix-based design firm is gaining national attention for its work on Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport’s Terminal 3 transformation. Ideation Design Group (IDG) has been named a finalist in the prestigious Airport Experience Awards which honors the best in global airport design, management and concessions.

Among IDG’s recognized work at Phoenix Sky Harbor is the restaurant design for San Tan Brewery and Pub in partnership with HMS Host. The 4,917-square-foot restaurant has been recognized as best-in-class for its dynamic design that brings the iconic Chandler brewpub to life in an airport setting.

“The vision for the future of Sky Harbor Airport is highly focused on creating a unique ‘sense of place’ and a one-of-a-kind customer experience through food and beverage options that are local favorites,” said Jennifer Reynolds, a Principal with Ideation Design Group. “Our goal was to bring the San Tan Brewing Company brand to life, by immersing customers in a three-dimensional space which truly reflects local tastes, traditions, culture and community values the concept is known for while serving the unique needs of airport travelers in a high-traffic area of a busy international airport terminal,” she said.

“Today, airports do more than launch airplanes,” said Steve Johnson, CEO, HMSHost. “They launch trends in the consumer experience. Our partnership and collaboration with IDG has been a key component to our success in bringing new and exciting dining components to a number of U.S. and international airports, including Phoenix Sky Harbor,” he said.

Terminal 3 is in the process of a three-part modernization effort to give travelers a more modern and efficient travel experience.  The South Concourse opened in 2017, and enhances the traveling experience with a larger, consolidated security checkpoint to get passengers to their gates faster, expanded ticket counter areas as well as other amenities.  The second component opened on February 3rd and will provide an all new North Concourse with many of these new dining and retail options. The final phase, which is expected to be completed in 2020, will include additional renovated areas with new shops and restaurants.

“Sky Harbor has become a key part of Phoenix’s growth as a global city. By bringing new and local dining and retail options to Terminal 3, we are not only sharing the Phoenix culture nationally, but internationally as well,” said Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego.

“Sky Harbor continues to spotlight the absolute best of our city,” she said.

Ideation Design Group is among the nation’s premier commercial design firms specializing in airport design and on-premise food, beverage and concessions. Since 2004, IDG has been involved in over 3000 airport design projects amassing an extensive collection of awards and accolades for completed work.

“Designing an award-winning airport restaurant is a unique challenge given the unusual environment and unique needs of busy travelers on the go,” Reynolds said. “We are thrilled to be recognized by the Airport Experience Awards as a leader in the commercial design industry that’s redefining the airport experience,” she said.

Winners of the 2020 Airport Experience® Awards will be announced at the Airport Experience® Conference in February.
