Heavyweight excavators are the workhorses on many construction jobs. Despite a machine’s toughness, its performance relies on the quality of its maintenance.

So for your machine to last long and costs to be kept down, regular maintenance on the most important excavator parts is essential. This is the right way to go about it:

1. Inspect Daily Before and After Use

The first thing will be to check for wear and tear of the skid steer; it should not have any visible leaks, cracks or loose fittings. Be sure to inspect hydraulic hoses, tracks and bucket edges extra closely, as they are the most abused.

3. Maintain Undercarriage Components

The undercarriage holds the full weight of the machine and exposes all its parts to harsh working conditions. Mud, stones, and various other debris become stuck in tracks, rollers, and idlers, leading to increased friction. 

If left unattended to, this problem results in uneven wear and tear and greatly shortens each part’s life. Rinsing the undercarriage parts after working with the machine allows you to avoid such a situation. Additionally, regular maintenance of the track’s tension will impact performance. 

4. Replace Worn Bucket Teeth and Edges

5. Monitor Engine and Cooling Systems

A lot of overheating is because the engines are working too hard for too long. Make sure the coolant is inspected on a daily basis and keep both the radiators and air cleaners free from dirt. The former can become jammed with dirt and dust often present in many dusty work sites.

Oil changes are no different than they are on a car. Clean fuel and regular servicing prevent the build-up of carbon and help produce correct power, which is required by the machine to run smoothly.

6. Store and Operate Equipment Properly

Proper handling ensures that your excavator lasts for many years after its expected life. Avoid overloading or working on a shaky surface, as it places extra strain on the components. Park the machine on level ground and use a cover to shield exposed areas when it is not in use in order to protect them from bad weather. 

Additionally, when storing for an extended period, drain the fluids and disconnect the battery to prevent rust from destroying the equipment.
