McCarthy Building Companies Inc. was recently named the general contractor for the addition of the eighth and final concourse at Terminal 4 in Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, a project valued at approximately $310 million.

During peak periods, existing gates at Terminal 4 are all currently occupied, diminishing customer service activity. The eighth concourse will add eight new gates to Terminal 4 for use by Southwest Airlines and will provide additional, new facilities to serve air travelers and support long-term airline activity. This new concourse will be located at the southwest corner of the terminal adjacent to the low D concourse.

Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport served nearly 44 million passengers in 2017.  Terminal 4 is the largest terminal at the airport and handles more than 80 percent of passenger traffic at the airport through 86 gates. The major tenants currently occupying Terminal 4 are Southwest Airlines and American Airlines.

The new concourse will include approximately 130,000 square feet configured with apron and passenger levels. The concourse will include the development of shell spaces for retail and food and beverage concessions. There will be a new connector bridge to connect the South concourses to the North concourses on the West side to Terminal 4 that will span Sky Harbor Blvd., as well as a new transfer bridge to connect the new concourse to the existing D concourse. In addition, the project will include terminal processor improvements, expansion of the existing checkpoint D, additional ticket counters, and new baggage handling systems along with an additional a baggage claim carousel to support the additional gates and associated travelers.

The project will require all ongoing operations at the terminal to be accommodated with minimal disruption during the implementation of the project. Facility construction is expected to begin in May 2019 with construction completion slated for the first quarter of 2022. The architects on the project include SmithGroup and Corgan.

“We are thrilled to have the opportunity to participate in the construction of what will be a phenomenal expansion for the city and airport, enhancing passenger travel with the addition of the eighth and final concourse in Terminal 4,” said Justin Kelton, President of McCarthy’s Southwest Region. “Our teams are well acquainted with the nuances of managing a construction project at a busy airport, having successfully completed the award-winning PHX Sky Train expansion to Terminal 3 and the ongoing multi-phased terrazzo flooring replacement project throughout Terminal 4 and welcome this opportunity to continue working with everyone at Sky Harbor.”
