The construction industry in Arizona continued to deliver high-quality projects during the first half of 2020 and it looks like that momentum will continue all the way through the year. AZRE Magazine asked Arizona Builders Alliance members to send in projects that have been recently completed or are currently under construction. Upon project completion, the building will also be LEED Silver certified. The building is walking distance from dining options, sports venues, ASU’s Tempe Campus, downtown Tempe and the Rural Road light rail station.

Project description: Caliber acquired Behavioral Health Hospital in August of 2019. Initially purchased for $12 million, the hospital is undergoing a complete renovation worth $11.3 million done by Caliber Development and Construction. The 96-bed facility is in an Opportunity Zone near downtown Phoenix and will care for patients struggling with medical and psychiatric conditions. Behavioral Health, Phoenix is one of the first Medical Opportunity Zone investments in the country and is desperately needed in the community. The Neuropsychiatric Hospital in Phoenix will open in 2020 and is expected to bring 80 high-income jobs into the area. Caliber will be acquiring additional Behavioral Health Hospitals in Opportunity Zones throughout the Southwest.

Project description: Cives Corporation, one of the largest and most successful structural steel and plate fabricators in North America, recently built a new Steel Fabrication Plant on a former rose garden in El Mirage, Arizona. This new Fabrication Plant is located on 25-acres and includes a new rail road spur for importing and exporting materials by rail, shipping and receiving yards with multiple crane ways, a 58,257 SF main building and five outbuildings for specialty equipment as part of the fabrication process, a large internal bridge crane, and blasting area for steel prep.

Project description: Built in 1884, Creighton Elementary School is rooted deep in Phoenix’s history. CHASSE completed a rebuild of the school that exchanges traditional classrooms for open, collaborative learning spaces. This new format will allow students to explore, work together, and better prepare them for the future. The new campus features three modern, two-story buildings, a new gymnasium, cafeteria, upgrades to the athletic fields, a community garden area, and an amphitheater. The buildings house learning labs in lieu of traditional classroom spaces, learning stairs for teaching and gathering, numerous break out spaces, and two interior slides!

Project description: The Eastmark High School and Junior High Phase 2 project was built for the Queen Creek Unified School District. The high school houses three two-story classroom buildings, constructed on a concrete foundation supported by footings and masonry stem walls with a structural frame comprised CMU block and steel; an exterior finish insulation system covered with painted CMU block, Kalwall insulated light transmitting panels, metal panels and a polyvinyl chloride roof. The project also featured two parking lots, outdoor basketball courts, athletic fields with bleacher seating. The junior high addition, for 7-8 grade students, is a two-story classroom building with labs, a makerspace and teacher lounge spaces featuring an outdoor learning stair, shade canopies, concrete CIP benches.

In addition, the facility is home to a full medical suite which can provide surgery to animals in need. Heidi’s Village features boarding space for up to 250 dogs and 200 cats with spacious outdoor recreation, a grooming facility, walking paths, obstacle courses and even a bone-shaped play pool!

Project description: The Northwest Fire Rescue District Station No. 337 project, built for Northwest Fire District, included the new construction of a light duty fire station to serve Marana, AZ. The facility contains apparatus bays, support areas, living spaces, offices, a kitchen, and dorm rooms. The fire station was constructed of a slab on grade foundation, a masonry structure with metal frame, and a TPO and metal canopy roof. An exterior of masonry block, stucco and metal panel completed the construction. The Northwest Fire Rescue District Station No. 337 provides a modern environment for the first responders serving the Dove Mountain area.

Project Description: This project involves the new construction for a single-story public library that is located adjacent to school campuses in Sahuarita, Arizona. The design has a simple façade for the main, north-facing entrance, but as a rock with crystals, the back of the library (what you will see from Sahuarita Rd) will feature two glassed spaces that will project out from the building. By day, the towers will provide natural light and views of the Santa Rita Mountains. At night, the glass towers will appear almost like beacons welcoming people in. The building materials and landscaping will represent Sahuarita’s history of mining and agriculture.

Project description: Walter Douglas Elementary School is undergoing significant renovations. The flight-themed campus added a 40,000 SF, two-story building that provides 24 new classrooms, maker spaces, a media center, and computer lab! The new building elements will be reminiscent of aircraft construction by featuring a metal exterior. The original building architecture was designed by John A. Shaver who utilized thin-shell concrete roofs in a circular classroom pod giving the structures a clamshell-like effect. Flowing Wells Unified School District committed to maintaining this rich history and two roofs were incorporated in the redesign of the campus.

The primary skin of the building is metal panels, glass, and vertical metal louvers to provide shading.
