The asphalt maintenance and full-service general contractor company was hired by Trax Builders, led by John Hensler, to handle all grading and paving of Track 2, APEX’s brand-new second circuit. Track 2 was added as part of the facility’s major expansion to complement the original 2.27-mile Track 1. The Track 2 project included over 260,000 CY of excavation and embankment to construct the track geometry and site infrastructure, placement of nearly 50,000 tons of aggregate base course, and installation of high-performance asphalt racing surfaces consisting of a 2.5-inch 1/2-inch MAG Marshall PG 70-10 base lift and a 1.5-inch 3/8-inch high-polymer modified PG 82-22 surface lift. Additional scope included specialized racing curbing, a large reinforced 100’ by 85’ concrete box culvert system with cutoff walls for stormwater management and long-term pavement stability, and supporting site and building pad development.

Track 2 at APEX Motor Club (located at 22408 N Ralston Rd, Maricopa, AZ 85139), is a premium, 2.43-mile high-performance circuit. The fast, flowing desert track allows members to drive their vehicles at top speeds in a private and exclusive setting.

Known for its sweeping, flowy and fast nature, Track 2’s layout contrasts with the highly-technical, stop-and-go speed of Track 1. If drivers wish, they can combine Track 1 and Track 2 into a massive 4.5-mile “APEX Ring” driving course, which is one of the most dynamic road courses in the Southwest.

As Matt Johnson, Sunland Asphalt & Construction CEO noted, the new track was designed and supplied in-house by Sunland Asphalt’s sister company, Solterra Materials. The high-performance polymer modified racetrack surface course was engineered with a high-performance asphalt mix, called MAG surface course, which is designed to handle hot desert temperatures and the high speeds of the vehicles.

“It was an honor to be hired as the leading asphalt team for this significant project at APEX Motor Club,” Johnson said. “We strived to create an exceptional racing surface that is not only the highest of quality, but will also deliver a smooth and safe ride for drivers.”
