Sundt Construction, Inc. announced the appointment of longtime Sundt employee Mike Hoover as president of the company. Hoover, previously serving as Sundt’s executive vice president and chief operating officer for the general contractor’s Civil Group, replaces former Sundt president and CEO, David S. Crawford, who retains his chief executive title.

Tom Case, who joined Sundt in March as senior vice president, Civil Group, will move into Hoover’s position as chief operating officer for that group.

Hoover, like Crawford, is among a shrinking class of construction company leaders who worked their way up from laborer to executive, holding just about every position in between. He originally joined Sundt as a laborer directly from high school in 1978, while studying mechanical engineering at the University of Arizona in Tucson. After college, Hoover worked in the field as an engineer and carpenter before returning to Sundt a few years later. Since then, he has held a variety of positions within the company including project engineer, project superintendent, project manager, senior project manager and division manager.

“Mike’s loyalty to the company is not only reflected in his time spent here but in the quality of work he’s produced throughout the years. He has been instrumental in building Sundt’s reputation as a leader in heavy civil construction,” said Crawford. “Mike possesses a rare combination of technical expertise, passion for the industry and leadership pedigree that will help our company achieve our goals for success.”

In addition to his role as president, Hoover will oversee Sundt’s National Projects Group as well as its Southwest District and safety/quality operations. A former chairman of the Highway and Transportation Division of the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC), Hoover is active on several boards of directors, including the AGC – Arizona Chapter, The Road Information Program (TRIP) and The Beavers, a national heavy civil organization.
