Audi of America is expanding its Traffic Light Information to Phoenix, which will enable select 2017 and 2018 Audis to communicate with Phoenix’s infrastructure.

The Traffic Light Information tool is an Audi Connect PRIME feature that receives information from the local traffic management system, allowing the driver to be more aware of traffic situations.

Audi states that Traffic Light Information being brought to cities is a “critical first step to lay the foundation for connected cities and driverless cars of the future.”

“Not only do V2I technologies like Traffic Light Information help to reduce driver stress, they are also essential infrastructure developments as we continue toward an automated future,” said Scott Keogh, president of Audi of America.

When an Audi with this technology stops at a stoplight, the vehicle will receive information from the stop light about how long the signal will stay red.

Audi stated its “time-to-green” information helps reduce the driver’s stress.

Future iterations of this V2I technology could bind with the vehicle’s start and stop functions, a “Green Light Optimized Speed Advisory,” enhanced navigation and other predictive tools.
