Historical Economic Impacts

Arizona’s journey as a Super Bowl host began in 1996 at Sun Devil Stadium, marking its first experience with the event. However, detailed economic data from that era is scarce. The state then hosted Super Bowl XLII in 2008 at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, which significantly strengthened its association with the Super Bowl. While the economic impact of this game was notable, detailed analysis is again, not readily available.

However, a more in-depth economic analysis is available for the 2015 Super Bowl XLIX, which was similarly hosted in Glendale. A study conducted by Arizona State University’s W.P. Carey School of Business estimates that the event had a gross economic impact of about $719.4 million on the area. In addition to indirect effects like more business for local suppliers and service providers, this figure included direct spending by tourists, the media, and teams.

Record-Breaking 2023 Super Bowl

The most recent Super Bowl in 2023 set new economic records for Arizona. An analysis conducted by the L. William Seidman Research Institute at ASU’s W.P. Carey School of Business revealed that Super Bowl LVII generated $1.3 billion in total economic activity for the state. Of this, $726.1 million contributed directly to Arizona’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

This remarkable economic impact was attributed to several factors:

  • Visitor Spending: The event attracted over 100,000 out-of-state visitors, who collectively spent more than $221 million during their stay.
  • Job Creation: The influx of visitors and associated activities supported approximately 10,459 jobs, resulting in a $494.1 million contribution to labor income in Arizona.
  • Media Exposure: With more than 6,000 credentialed media members from over 24 countries covering the event, Arizona received extensive global exposure, potentially boosting future tourism and business investments.

Beyond Immediate Financial Gains

While the immediate financial benefits of hosting the Super Bowl are substantial, the event’s long-term economic advantages are equally significant.

The extensive media coverage and global attention position Arizona as a prime destination for future tourism, business conferences, and large-scale events. The successful hosting of the Super Bowl enhances the state’s reputation for effectively managing major events, which can attract further opportunities.

Beyond tourism and business, the Super Bowl also brings heightened national interest in sports betting, with platforms offering expert NFL matchup and prop advice on FanDuel, further engaging fans and contributing to the state’s growing sports economy.

Moreover, the infrastructural improvements and investments made in preparation for the Super Bowl, such as enhancements to transportation and hospitality facilities, provide lasting benefits to residents and future visitors alike.

Future Opportunities

Arizona’s proven track record in hosting successful Super Bowls positions it favorably for future events. The state’s favorable climate, modern infrastructure, and experience in managing large-scale events make it an attractive option for the NFL and major event organizers.

Looking ahead, Arizona aims to be in regular rotation for hosting the Superbowl. The state’s leadership and event organizers are committed to leveraging the experience gained from previous events to attract future Super Bowls and other significant events, thereby sustaining and enhancing the economic benefits for the region.

Future Opportunities for Growth

The Super Bowl has consistently delivered substantial economic benefits to Arizona, with each event surpassing previous records in terms of financial impact. Beyond the immediate influx of spending, the long-term advantages, including enhanced global exposure and infrastructural developments, contribute to the state’s ongoing economic growth. As Arizona continues to build on its legacy of hosting successful Super Bowls, the future holds promising opportunities for further economic advancement.
