Despite decades of advocacy for equal pay, the pay gap between men and women in the United States still remains wide — particularly in Gilbert and Chandler, which both rank among the 15 cities with the largest gender pay gaps in the nation.

Full-time, year-round working women earn about 82% of what their male counterparts earn, according to the Census Bureau. The good news is that Arizona is doing better than most states when it comes to gender pay gaps. Arizona ranks at the bottom of states (No. 47) with the biggest gender pay gaps. Arizona men earn a median income of $57,628, compared with $50,126 for women, for a pay gap of $7,502, well below the national average of $11,069.

With Equal Pay Day coming up on March 12, a new annual study by ChamberofCommerce.org analyzed the widest gender pay gaps in 170 cities across the country and found that the Metro Phoenix area ranks among the largest earnings gaps in the nation.

Both Gilbert and Chandler have gender pay gaps nearly twice as high as the national average ($11,069).

  • Median Earnings: $66,727
  • Male Median Earnings: $75,443
  • Female Median Earnings: $58,410
  • Gender Pay Gap: $17,033
  • Women’s earnings as a percentage of men’s earnings: 77.4%

Frisco, Texas tops the list with a pay gap of $52,216, which is nearly five times the nationwide average of $11,069.
