Today’s spotlight: Julie Laulis

CEO

Sparklight (Formerly Cable One)

Background: Laulis is chair of the board, president and CEO of Sparklight. She holds a bachelor’s degree in telecommunications from Indiana University in Bloomington and is a graduate of the Harvard Business School Program for Management Development.  Laulis currently serves on the boards of The AES Corporation, CableLabs, The Cable Center, and C-SPAN and is a trustee of the C-SPAN Education Foundation.

Professional advice: “One piece of advice would be to gain deep knowledge in a functional area, but also have broad knowledge in many others. In the connectivity business, for example, that may mean having in-depth experience in marketing, but a willingness to work in other areas to gain exposure to the overall business (i.e. technology, operations, system management, etc.). By understanding how all the pieces fit together, one will be in a better position to bring value to the organization.”

Lesson learned in 2020: “I try to learn constantly – whether it’s through reading or asking questions.  I have a natural curiosity and genuinely want to understand how things function, learn new skills and understand people – their motivations and thought processes. I learn the most from my mistakes, as I tend to reflect (some might say ruminate) on them. I am getting better at reframing my own internal thoughts, which allows me to be a better leader.”

Surprising fact: “I wanted to be a pilot when I was a senior in high school. Also, I’d like to own a Hallmark store as I am a greeting card addict.”
