Perhaps you’re a person who can focus on essential things and work toward a vision, someone who sets goals and achieves them. Or perhaps you’re a person with a never-ending curiosity, someone with an open mind, willing to learn and grow at a rapid rate.

If you were to list your strengths, you’d be surprised at your spectrum of wonderful qualities. Unfortunately, like most people, you may never have taken the time to recognize all the things you do remarkably well.

If you haven’t yet realized that you’re an amazing person, then here are three steps to help you unlock your unacknowledged superpowers.

Step 1: Increase Your Self-Awareness

Here are two easy ways to enhance your self-awareness:

1. Reflect on how you can take responsibility for your life: So many people blame their circumstances for everything that’s wrong in their lives. It’s understandable to a certain extent, but the truth is that we all have opportunities to take full responsibility for our lives and improve our circumstances. When you turn your problems into projects, you’ll quickly realize that there is often a simple solution to every problem. If, say, you’re unhappy with the appearance of wrinkles around your eyes, then finding the right retinol eye cream may be all you need to restore firm skin again. Or if you don’t like your job, then make a fresh decision to find work that you love.

2. Think about what might be stopping you from greater self-actualization: Stress, for example, is a big problem. When you find ways to manage your stress, you’ll rediscover your power to think clearly about things and take decisive action to turn difficult situations around.

Step 2: Cultivate Empathy and Compassion

Empathy is about caring for others. It’s feeling their frustration, confusion, or distress and responding to it as if it were your own angst.

It may be one of the most important skills for many modern-day jobs, such as healthcare, education, and psychology. It’s also important for creating harmony in your family life and improving your social life.

When you awaken the empathy within you, putting aside your disappointment in people, you’ll see everything differently. You’ll begin to understand others, spontaneously show compassion, and sense how to make a difference in their lives.

Compassion, of course, is understanding that other people are just like you. They, too, are flawed with illusions of not being good enough, struggling against their own self-doubts, and trying their best to convince the world that they have what it takes to make a difference. They, too, underestimate themselves because of their lack of self-love and self-appreciation.

The world would be a much better place if we could all be more empathetic and compassionate.

Step 3. Learn to Develop Rapport

People are more social now than before. Technology has made it easier to reach out to connect with others by phone, email, Facebook, Instagram, Skype, and so on. But with improved technology, we have also lost some of our social skills when talking to someone in person.

There are five steps to help you quickly establish rapport with anyone:

1. Make eye contact.

2. Listen and pay attention to what they are saying rather than simply waiting for your chance to speak.

3. Let your intuition nudge you on how to respond appropriately to what you believe they are really thinking and feeling.

4. Try to see things from their point of view.

5. Be gracious and courteous.

Improve Your Willpower and Self-Control

One reason you may not realize that you’re an amazing person is that you get in your own way. This can be fixed by improving your willpower. When you strengthen it, you’ll start making better decisions on how to live a life of your own choosing. Cultivating an iron will also lead to self-control, which, in turn, will lead to cultivating good habits and dropping bad ones.
