Ballet Arizona is kicking off Halloween weekend and the start of their season with a spooky twist to its performance of the classic ballet “Swan Lake.”
Bringing “Swan Lake” back to Ballet Arizona for the first time since 2009, the dancers will perform the ballet in their traditional costumes, but the “normal clothing” rule does not apply to the audience for the night of October 31.
Audience members are encouraged to come in their Halloween attire, and those who show up in costume will be able to purchase discounted tickets for $35 in the Halloween section and will have the opportunity to enter the costume contest.
Those who enter the costume contest have the opportunity to win $500 in cash for the best overall costumes. Prizes for best costumes in the categories of Best Zombie Dancer Costume, Best Traditional Dancer Costume and Best Non-Dancer Costume will also be offered.
October 31 is the only night for the spooky version of Swan Lake, but the ballet will have 6 performances from Oct. 30 to Nov. 2 at Symphony Hall in downtown Phoenix.
The ballet, featuring the music of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and under the direction of Ib Anderson, is about a young hunter who falls in love with Odette, the Swan Queen, and revolves around the trials surrounding their romance.
