The city of Glendale is giving valley artists a brand-new canvas to share their work. First up the Plein Air Painting Competition. This event welcomes artists who paint using the Plein Air technique and features $1000 awards in two categories.
In short, Plein Air is about leaving the studio behind and painting outdoors and for this competition that means outdoors Glendale. Artists will begin the morning of February 29th. Artists can register that morning beginning at 8 a.m. at Sahuaro Ranch Park, 9802 N. 59th Ave. Their work will be on display for judges and the public starting at 3 p.m. To download an application, artists can go here.
And just a few days later, a different take on open air painting. March 4, the city will be unveiling 20 downtown benches painted by local artists. The “Take a Seat, Glendale!” project was initiated by downtown merchants, coordinated by the Chamber of Commerce and funded by the city. The benches will give residents and visitors alike a whole new way to interact with art and experience downtown Glendale. Councilmember Jamie Aldama and artists will be on hand along 58th Avenue and Glendale for a short ceremony at 4:30 p.m. followed by a big reveal at 5:00 p.m.
