While everyone has a favorite cocktail, we’re curious about which ones are the most in demand in individual states and what this may suggest about regional and national tastes. We explored Google search data to find the most popular cocktail in each state. The findings make for intriguing reading, so let’s take a look.

Here’s a glimpse of our findings:

  • This summer, the Aperol Spritz emerges as the most popular cocktail in Arizona and is also favored in 21 other states, closely followed by the Margarita in 17 states and the Old Fashioned in 9 states.
  • The Moscow Mule is the favorite in several Mountain West states, such as Wyoming, Idaho, Montana, and Utah. This indicates a regional preference for cocktails with a zesty and spicy ginger beer flavor.
  • Mimosa is a favorite in three states, but it shares the top spot with at least one other cocktail in each. In Nevada, it ties with the Old Fashioned and Aperol Spritz. In Wisconsin, it shares the lead with the Margarita, Moscow Mule, and Old Fashioned. In South Carolina, it shares the top spot with the Margarita.
  • New Mexico stands out as the only state to choose the Paloma, a cocktail featuring tequila, grapefruit soda, lime, and salt. This choice highlights a strong cultural link with Mexico, where tequila originates. Similarly, Hawaii’s favorite, the tropical Mai Tai, also reflects cultural influences.
