America is renowned for its love of all things haunted, with more than two in five Americans believing in demons (43%) and ghosts (41%). However, some of us REALLY want to avoid paranormal encounters, so which U.S. states are the least haunted?

Intrigued by the supernatural, BonusFinder.com analyzed an eerie array of factors: the amount of cemeteries, reported ghost sightings, haunted locations, and the amount of paranormal investigators in each state to uncover America’s least haunted states.

The 10 Least Haunted States in America

New Jersey is the least haunted state in the US, boasting 1,941 cemeteries – that’s equivalent to 20.6 cemeteries per 100,000 residents! New Jerseyans have the fourth lowest number of ghost sightings per 100,000 people (11.7), and the lowest number of haunted locations per 100,000 people (1.9). In addition, there are 9 paranormal investigators, all culminating in a haunted state score of 0.8/10.

Arizona occupies the second spot with a low haunted score of 0.9/10, with its wide-open deserts and arid landscapes leaving little room for ghostly apparitions. The state counts 932 cemeteries (12.6 per 100,000 residents), and a total of 805 ghost sightings have been reported (10.9 per 100,000 people). Finally, the Grand Canyon State is home to 10 paranormal investigators. 

Rounding up the top three is Nevada, with a haunted score of 1.0/10. Following closely Arizona and New Jersey, the state has among the lowest number of paranormal investigators (4 or 0.12 per 100,000 individuals), and the lowest amount of haunted locations per 100,000 (1.9).

The 10 Most Haunted States in America

Texas is the most haunted state in the US, culminating in a whopping haunted city score of 9.8/10. Texans have the highest number of ghost sightings overall (7,517) as well as per 100,000 people (247.7), and the highest number of haunted locations per 100,000 people (30.5).

Maine takes the second spot for the most haunted states in the US with a score of 9.0/10.  Followed by Florida and Vermont, who complete the top three with a haunted score of 8.8/10. Vermont is among the states with the highest number of haunted locations per 100,000 residents (26.9), whereas Florida has among the highest number of ghost sightings in the top 10 with 1,785 sightings.
