Feng shui is important at home and at work. We compiled the most convincing facts on feng shui that prove its efficiency and value.

Feng Shui originated over 6,000 years ago in Chinese culture. It’s equal parts art and science, together creating a prosperous and calming atmosphere. Its practice includes placement of objects, balance and harmony, and promoting good health.

But one large question remains—does Feng shui work?

Like many things, feng shui is not a one-size-fits-all exercise. It’s the art of balance, but balance means different things to different people. In short, feng shui works for you if you fit it into your lifestyle, your routine, and your likings.

Let’s see how you can put feng shui at work in your home to establish a warm and powerful environment.

1. Declutter Your Space

One of the main practices of Feng Shui is the art of decluttering.

Clutter makes it harder to focus and can even foster anxiety and insomnia. Lightening your load makes your days easier, as you’ve got less around you for distraction. Practice taking 10-15 minutes putting away stray objects—and donate or toss unnecessary ones.

2. Embrace the Color Green

This is especially important if you’re surrounded by technology all day.

What do we mean by this? Get more plants

Not only are they aesthetically pleasing, but they’re also great for our health. Snake plants, bromeliads, orchids, and succulents are a few of many that work great in bedrooms. At night, they even emit oxygen, giving us purity we could all enjoy.

3. Take Down Your Walls

One thing that’s bad for your feng shui, especially when it comes to your desk?

Having it face the wall, or placing your back to the door, is not a powerful position for productivity. When your back is to the door, you’re placing yourself in a vulnerable position. And facing a wall is just unpleasant.

There are measures you can take—see step 2—to improve the situation if moving your desk isn’t workable. And if you’re getting ready to move, most housing complexes offer 3D floor plans online. You can scope out the spot before you commit to it (and its potential lack of good space).

Live in a home where you can do as you please? Consider even knocking down a wall, inviting more space for creativity into the house.

4. The Art of a Clean Bathroom

A cluttered, dirty bathroom isn’t good for our physical or mental health. No one likes the sight of mold or unsightly hair. And neglecting to clean it is one major no-no on the Feng Shui checklist.

A clean bathroom improves safety (bye, slick surfaces!) and immune health while lowering germ spreading. Plus there’s the added benefit of not having to stress over another room to clean.

Keep your toilet lid closed—and if your bathroom faces a major room, keep the door closed.

Does Feng Shui Work?

It works if you work it!

If you have to ask—does Feng Shui work?—you may be missing the point. Feng Shui is about achieving balance and composure. You have to decide how that works for you.

Does it mean donating clothes? Sifting through your knick-knacks? Taking down some of the posters in your bedroom (or maybe even a whole wall)?

Embrace the minimalist mentality and you’re on your way to Feng Shui success.
