Travel is expected to be vastly different for the foreseeable future. While states have mandated travel restrictions and stay-at-home orders, many Americans are looking for ways to play by the rules and upgrade their “staycation” experience. What does this mean for hosts/Airbnb homeowners? Airbnb’s booking volumes were significantly impacted by COVID-19. They bottomed out in April 2020, with revenues 79% lower than in April 2019. In May, as high occupancy hotels became unavailable, Airbnb’s booking rates started steadily increasing to the numbers we see today.

The average length of stay increased to six days, and rural units were booked more frequently. Many hosts have converted their units into affordable long-term housing to help those who have been affected by the pandemic.

QuoteWizard analysts looked at states that have the most active Airbnb listings per 100,000 residents during 2020. We then compared that figure to the occupancy rate to determine the top states for Airbnb stays. States with the most listings and the highest rates of Airbnb occupancy include California, Florida and New York.

Does homeowners insurance cover Airbnb hosting?

Homeowners insurance companies usually don’t cover the commercial use of a home, such as an Airbnb rental. This means that if an Airbnb guest damages your belongings, your homeowners insurance claim would be denied because it’s a commercial property issue. However, if you use your home as an Airbnb rental for less than 30 days out of the year, there may be no homeowners insurance issues, depending on your provider. If you rent the house for Airbnb use more than that, your home insurer may not provide the coverage you need. In that case, you may want to look at alternative insurance.
