Basic Requirements

There are a few basic requirements you should know about upfront before jumping in to get your real estate license. All applicants in Arizona must be at least 18 years of age and be able to provide proof of legal presence to the Arizona Department of Real Estate (ADRE).

You’ll need to get an Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS) fingerprint card. Additionally, you’ll need to complete a Disciplinary Actions Disclosure Form. If you’re able to meet those prerequisites, then you qualify as a candidate for your real estate license!

Complete Online Instruction Hours

Once you’ve determined your eligibility, it’s time to find an accredited Arizona school of real estate. You can visit the American Realty Academy to verify whether a school is accredited or not.

An accredited school will offer the state-required 96 hours of instruction needed to become a real estate agent. This includes 90 hours of Arizona pre-licensing instruction and a 6 hours Arizona Contract Writing course.

There are both online and in-person options for the pre-licensing course. You should choose the option that best fits your lifestyle. Going the online route means you can study on your own schedule, balance work and school, and it may be a slightly cheaper option.

In-person classes tend to be more engaging and allow you to make personal connections with classmates and teachers. Either option will help you take the steps to get your real estate license, so choose whichever feels right for you.

Pass the Course Final Exam

There is a final exam at the end of the pre-licensing course. Participants must pass the final exam to move forward with obtaining their real estate license. This exam acts as a practice test for the state exam that is administered by Pearson Vue.

Obtain Required Documents

Once you pass the course final exam, you’ll need to gather the required documents that were mentioned in the basic requirements. Below is some brief information on each document:

Fingerprint Clearance Card

The fingerprint clearance card and information packet can be obtained from the DPS. Be aware that the process to obtain the fingerprint clearance card can take up to eight to ten weeks.

Disciplinary Actions Disclosure Form (LI-214/244)

This form gathers information on an applicant’s background. You must fill out this form to apply for licensure, and your date of birth and social security number are required.

There is a criminal conviction and background disclosure portion of this form that must be completed by all applicants. Depending on what disclosures are made, there may be additional documents or information required.

Disclosure Document Checklist (LI-400)

If you disclose a criminal conviction, extra documents and information are required. The Disclosure Document Checklist tells you what is required to submit to ADRE if you’ve disclosed a criminal conviction.

Pass the Arizona Real Estate Exam

You can schedule the state examination through Pearson Vue. You will need to provide the exam administrator with two forms of current signature identification. One must be a government-issued ID with your photo. You’ll also need to provide your Salesperson Education Certificate for the 96 hours of coursework you completed.

There are examination fees that are subject to change without notice. You can look up those fees on the Pearson Vue website.

The test takes about three hours to complete. It consists of 100 multiple choice questions related to real estate laws and procedures. You must get a 75% or better to pass. There are several exam preparation classes available if you want extra help before taking the test.

Apply for Your License

Once you pass the test you can finally apply for your license! You must apply within one year from the date of passing the national and state-specific portions of the Arizona Real Estate exam.

Find a Brokerage to Work For

In Arizona, you are required to work for a licensed broker. You must find a broker to hire you and access the ADRE online system to approve you before you can legally work as a licensed agent.
