Recognizing heritage projects that demonstrate excellence in design and execution.

The 1891 Second Pinal County Courthouse restoration project earned the Governor’s Heritage Preservation Grand Prize Award at the Arizona Historic Preservation Conference. In 2012 Pinal County, ARCADIS, Swan Architects, and Concord General Contracting restored, rehabilitated, and renovated the building to preserve the historic features of the facility while incorporating modernized systems and requirements necessary for a 21st Century Building.

The Governor’s Heritage Preservation Awards recognize people, organizations, and projects that represent outstanding achievements in preserving Arizona’s historic resources on an annual basis. They publicly recognize educational, community, non-profit, and private sector heritage projects that demonstrate excellence in design and execution.

The 1891 Second Pinal County Courthouse was in such disrepair that it was listed on Arizona’s Most Endangered Historic Places list prior to the $5.3 million rehabilitation project. Prior to the renovation the 1891 Second Pinal County Courthouse had been vacant for several years. Today the facility serves as the offices of the Pinal County Supervisor’s making it one of the oldest and original facilities still in use as a public building. Additionally, the building has an interpretive center that is open to the main public and outlines the history of Florence and two large multipurpose rooms, including the original historic courtroom, that were designed for community events.
