Scottsdale League for the Arts Appoints Board Member

Susan E. Wells, partner of business law firm Jaburg Wilk, has been appointed to the Board of Directors of the Scottsdale League for the Arts.

The Scottsdale League for the Arts is a non-profit volunteer organization supporting artists, arts programs and education through fundraising and special events, including the Scottsdale Culinary Festival. Funds raised are granted to arts-focused organizations.

Wells has been a member of the organization for three years and has been actively involved for five. In April 2013, she chaired the VIP Passport to the Picnic Experience at the Scottsdale Culinary Festival. She founded and chaired the “Take the Cake Competition,” a cake decorating contest for professionals and culinary art students that showcased participant’s creativity and talents to top pastry chefs and Wine Country Brunch guests. In 2014, she will co-chair the “Friends of James Beard Benefit Dinner,” a culinary feast prepared by several James Beard award-winning chefs and held at the Westin Kierland Resort and Spa.

“The Scottsdale League for the Arts has issued millions of dollars of grant money to arts-focused organizations over its 35-year history,” said Wells. “This past year has been one of the League’s best years in terms of fundraising. I look forward to working with Jerry McMahon, the incoming President, and the League directors and members in making 2014 an even better year by enhancing the League’s legacy and positively impacting the community.”

Wells is an attorney at Phoenix Business law firm Jaburg Wilk. Practice areas include Business/Corporate law, Franchise law, Healthcare law and Employment law. Crescent Ballroom – More Than Just Music And Munchies

Crescent Ballroom extends its hours to accommodate the downtown lunch-hour crowd

Don’t let the size of this venue fool you. It’s a triple-threat host to seven nights of live music and a full-service bar, as well as two well-known chefs in its kitchen. And — it’s no longer limiting itself as a Downtown Phoenix happy hour hot spot and music joint. Crescent Ballroom is extending its hours and its demographic — opening up for lunch.

Opened in October 2011, owner Charlie Levy transformed the F.L. Hart Garage into the live music venue it is today, hosting a wide range of local and national musicians and artists. But it isn’t just the music that customers are walking, biking and light railing to experience; the food has become quite the headliner, too.

Levy joined forces with Chris Bianco of Pizzeria Bianco, and Doug Robson of Gallo Blanco, to create Cocina 10 with its locally-sourced menu comprised of what they call “Mexican-accented road food,” featuring common finger foods with a border-inspired twist.

“Even if they don’t come for a show or they’re taking a chance on a band, I always hope they enjoy the experience and the food,” Levy says. “I want them to enjoy their meal and think it’s exceptional and at a fair price, and that they enjoy the atmosphere.”

And they have, and they do.

“We kept getting feedback from customers who kept asking why the hours were so limited and why we were only open at night,” Levy says.

In April, Crescent Ballroom opened its doors during the lunch hour, starting at 11 a.m., appealing especially to the business crowd on their lunch break, Levy adds. Cocina 10 will continue to have the same menu operated by Bianco and Robson.

Fundraising Event – Help Turn Brown Lots In Phoenix Green

On Monday, May 21st from 5:30- 8:30pm hundreds of people who prefer beautiful views over dirt lots will gather for a fundraising event, Turning Brown Lots Green benefiting the Roosevelt Row Community Development Corporation. The Roosevelt Row CDC is a mostly volunteer organization that works to beautify and promote downtown Phoenix’s Roosevelt Row neighborhood.

Phoenix City Councilman Tom Simplot says, “An area like Roosevelt Row makes a city unique. The Roosevelt Row Community Development Corporation does a great deal to support the artists, businesses and residents of the area.”

Roosevelt Row is a walkable, creative district in the urban core of downtown Phoenix that is nationally known for its arts and cultural events, award-winning restaurants, galleries, boutiques and live music. The Roosevelt Row CDC is fostering an urban renewal with rehabilitated bungalows and new infill projects.

Councilman Simplot says, “The fundraising event, Turning Brown Lots Green, is one of my favorite events of the year! I can get involved and be part of an organization that does a lot to create a buzz about what’s unique and special about downtown Phoenix.”

All proceeds from Roosevelt Row’s annual fundraising event will support A.R.T.S (Adaptive Reuse of Temporary Space), Valley of the Sunflowers, and volunteer community art projects.
