Microchip Acquires Novocell Semiconductor

Chandler-based Microchip Technology Inc., a leading provider of microcontroller, mixed-signal, analog and Flash-IP solutions, through its Silicon Storage Technology (SST) subsidiary, and Novocell Semiconductor, Inc. (Novocell) announced that Microchip and SST have signed a definitive agreement to acquire Novocell.  The acquisition was approved by the Boards of Directors of each company and is being announced at the 2013 Design Automation Conference (DAC) in Austin, Texas.  The terms of the deal are confidential.  The transaction is expected to close in early June 2013 and is expected to be immediately accretive on a non-GAAP basis.

“We are pleased to announce the acquisition of Novocell and are expecting great things as we integrate the technology into our ever-expanding portfolio of IP solutions,” said Mark Reiten, vice president of Technology Licensing for SST, a wholly owned subsidiary of Microchip.  “This acquisition provides our customers with valuable and differentiated technology and helps us to enable their designs with an even more comprehensive set of solutions, expanding our position as a leading memory IP supplier.”

Under the acquisition agreement, Novocell will become a wholly owned subsidiary of SST, a Microchip company.  SST and Novocell are committed to a seamless customer transition.  SST plans to invest in continuing, designing, developing and extending Novocell’s product portfolio and roadmap.

Microchip Delivers 12 Billionth Microcontroller

Microchip Technology Inc., a leading provider of microcontroller, mixed-signal, analog and Flash-IP solutions, today announced the shipment of its 12 billionth PIC® microcontroller (MCU) to the Nidec Corporation—a preeminent global supplier of precision motors, based in Japan.  Microchip delivered this 12 billionth MCU approximately 10 months after delivering its 11 billionth.
Today’s announcement demonstrates the industry’s continued acceptance of Microchip’s 8, 16 and 32-bit PIC microcontrollers as the high-performance, low-power, cost-effective solution for embedded-control designs.

“The time between each of our 1 billionth shipments continues to accelerate, in the face of Microchip’s increasing MCU market share, and shipping our 12 billionth to a long-term customer like Nidec makes this achievement particularly gratifying,” said Microchip’s president and CEO Steve Sanghi.  “Motor control has always been one of our strengths, and the fact that such an esteemed global leader in motor manufacturing has continued using our PIC MCUs for so long is a testament to that strength.”

Microchip Announces FIRST Robotics results

Microchip Technology Inc., a leading provider of microcontroller, mixed-signal, analog and Flash-IP solutions, today announced the results of the 2013 FIRST® Robotics Competition (FRC) Arizona Regional, held March 22-23, 2013 in Chandler.

Phoenix’s Carl Hayden High School; Tempe Preparatory Academy, Tempe; and Buena High School, Sierra Vista qualified to compete in the 2013 FIRST Robotics Competition Championship, April 25-27, 2013 in St. Louis, MO. Kingman High School/Kingman Academy of Learning, Kingman; Yuma High School, Yuma; and Rockwell-Collins & Escondido Charter High School, Escondido, Calif. were Regional Finalists.  Students had six weeks to build a robot capable of competing in this year’s competition, the game called Ultimate AscentSM, where teams joined forces to fling saucer-like discs through various slots during several two-minute and fifteen-second matches.  Extra points were scored for robots that could hang from a 10 foot tower in the final seconds of the match.  Any student participating on a FIRSTteam is eligible to apply for more than $16 million in scholarships.

“The engineering challenge presented by FIRST to build a functioning robot that must accomplish specific tasks inspires students to find creative solutions using math, science and engineering, while adhering to strict deadlines.  Working with industry mentors, students learn marketable skills such as working on a team, critical thinking, marketing and problem solving, while having fun at the same time,” said Steve Sanghi, president and CEO of Microchip Technology, co-chair of the FIRST Arizona Regional Planning Committee, FIRST sponsor and member of the FIRST Board of Directors.

Chandler, Ariz.-based Microchip Technology is the organizing sponsor of the FRC Arizona Regional.  Fifty high-school robotics teams competed in the 2013 FRC AZ Regional, including 44 teams from Arizona, three from New Mexico, two from California and one from Mexico.  AZFirst, a non-profit organization, awarded the Steve Sanghi Scholarship to Bianca Rodriquez, a senior at Carl Hayden High School, Phoenix, AZ.  Funded by Steve and Maria Sanghi, this scholarship totals $16,000 over four years, and is awarded to an outstanding FIRST participant who intends to pursue a college degree in science, technology, engineering or math.  Coconino High School won the Regional Chairman’s Award, which recognizes the team that best represents a model for other teams to emulate, and embodies the purpose and goals of FIRST.  Christine Sapio, teacher at Coconino High School, Flagstaff, a FTC (FIRST Technical Competition) Affiliate Partner, received the “Outstanding Volunteer of the Year” award for her success in growing the FTC robotics program for middle-school and high-school students.

Additionally, Dave Thompson, FIRST coach at Coconino High School, received the Woodie Flowers Finalist Award, which recognizes a teacher or engineer who demonstrates excellence in teaching science, math and creative design.  Chris Brandt from Saguaro High School in Scottsdale was awarded the “Arizona Teacher of the Year,” based upon an essay written by his students.

Microchip Expands USB Portfolio

Chandler-based Microchip Technology Inc., a leading provider of microcontroller, analog and Flash-IP solutions, announced from the DESIGN East/ESC Boston Conference the expansion of its certified Full-Speed USB 2.0 Device PIC microcontroller portfolio with three new Enhanced Midrange 8-bit families comprising 15 scalable MCUs ranging from 14 to 100 pins with up to 128 KB of Flash.  All feature internal clock sources with the 0.25% clock accuracy necessary for USB communication, which saves up to $0.15 by eliminating the need for an external crystal.  Additionally, all three families are eXtreme Low Power compliant, with power consumption down to 35 µA/MHz Active and 20 nA in Sleep mode.

The 14- and 20-pin PIC16F145X MCUs are Microchip’s lowest-cost and smallest-form-factor USB MCUs to date.  Available in packages as small as 4×4 mm and featuring a wide array of integrated peripherals, the three-member family enables embedded applications that require USB connectivity and capacitive touch sensing, such as pulse oxymeters, PC accessories and security dongles.

The PIC18F2X/4XK50 devices, available in 28- and 40/44-pins, offer a cost-effective, pin-compatible migration option for customers utilizing legacy PIC18 USB MCUs.  The three family members feature 1.8-5V operation, and integrate a “Charge Time Measurement Unit” for higher performance cap-touch sensing as well as measurement in applications such as audio docks and data loggers.

The full-featured PIC18F97J94 family is Microchip’s first to offer integrated LCD control, RTCC with Vbat, and USB on a single 8-bit PIC microcontroller.  Available in 64, 80 and 100 pins, the nine-member family offers a 60×8 LCD controller (for a total of 480 segments), which eliminates the need for an external controller in applications with large segmented displays.  It also integrates a real-time clock/calendar with battery back-up for end products such as home-automation/security panels, handheld scanners and single-phase energy meters.

“Today’s broad announcement demonstrates our commitment to innovation in the 8-bit MCU market,” said Steve Drehobl, vice president of Microchip’s MCU8 Division.  “No one else offers crystal-free USB microcontrollers from 14 to 100 pins with this level of integration and low power consumption.”

To help speed development times, the downloadable and open-source USB Framework within the free Microchip Library of Applications (MLA) includes USB drivers for many common USB classes, including HID, CDC, Mass Storage, Win-USB and Audio-MIDI.  These drivers can be used with all 15 of the new PIC MCUs.

In addition to providing free USB software drivers and stacks, Microchip hardware development tools are available for purchase.  The Low Pin Count USB Development Kit (part # DM164127, $39.99) is available now, for use with the PIC16F145X family.  The PICDEM™ FS-USB Board (part # DM163025-1, $59.99) is expected to be available in October, for use with the PIC18FXXK50 family.

Microchip Technology To Continue 8051 MCUs Production

Microchip Technology Inc. announced last week that it would continue to manufacture the legacy 8051/80C51 MCUs.

Microchip Technology’s acquisition of Silicon Storage Technology, Inc. (SST) included a legacy 80C51 MCU; Microchip continues to support this project.

“Microchip has a history of supporting customers with long lifetimes on all of our product lines,” said Randy Drwinga, vice president at Microchip Technology Inc. “We also have a strong presence in the industrial, automotive and medical markets, and understand that long-lifecycle product support is important to these customers. We welcome anyone currently using NXP’s 80C51 MCUs who doesn’t wish to redesign their end products to use our 100% compatible 80C51 product portfolio, and we offer them the option to migrate to our broad portfolio of 8-bit, 16-bit and 32-bit PIC® microcontrollers, at their convenience.”

The 8051/80C51 MCU’s provide pin-for-pin compatible replacements for most MCUs placed under the “End-of-Life” notifcation by NXP, which include NXP’s P89LV51RB2/C2/D2 and P89V51RB2/C2/D2 EOL series of 80C51 8-bit microcontrollers.

NXP’s 989LV 3V MCUs are 100% compatible with Microchip Technology’s SST89V MCUs, whereas NXP’s P89V 5V MCUs are pin-for-pin compatible with Microchip Technology’s SST89E microcontrollers.

Microchip Technology’s 80C51 MCUs can be used with many popular third-party development tools, such as Xeltek, Hi-Lo Systems, Advantech Eqipment Corp., EETools and Phyton.

These MCUs are available for $1.22 each, in 10,000-unit quantities.
